The widow of a human rights lawyer who killed himself at the age of 48 is suing a psychiatrist for £5 million over claims of negligence.

John Jones was head of international law at Doughty Street Chambers and represented defendants at the special court set up by the UN for alleged war crimes in Sierra Leone. More recently he had acted for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks.

The QC died after walking out of the Nightingale Hospital, a private facility in north London, where he was being treated for acute depression in 2016.

Jones had described himself as being locked in a “downward spiral” before he was admitted to the hospital under the care of Stephen Pereira, an eminent psychiatrist.
