Trevi Fountain turned black by climate change protesters
The water in Rome’s Trevi Fountain turned black when climate change activists contaminated it with dye.
Seven protesters linked to the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) tipped buckets of diluted vegetable carbon into the 18th-century fountain.
Some unfurled banners that said “Non paghiamo il fossile” (“Let’s not pay for fossil fuels”) as they claimed the government’s investment in the energy source had contributed to climate change and recent flooding in Italy that has killed 14 people.
“Our country is dying,” the activists chanted as nearby crowds whistled and booed. Police arrived moments later and dragged them out of the fountain.
“Our government continues undaunted to give the fossil fuel industry public funding for tens of billions of euros each year,” Ultima Generazione said.
