Iam driving next to the sea at Platja de Castelldefels in Spain and I can hear the gentle lap of waves and the Beach Boys on a distant radio. There’s no noise from the engine to spoil the tranquillity because I’m at the wheel of a battery-powered vehicle. For a while now silent, pollution-free camper vans have been a dream of travellers — or “rubber tramps” as they’re known in the US — but they’ve been slow to materialise. Specialist companies offer conversions from diesel to electric, but they haven’t beena roaring success. Typically they have a real-world range of only 100 miles or less.
