Rishi Sunak will ask his ethics chief for advice about Suella Braverman’s requests for a private speed awareness course, as he flies home to decide the home secretary’s fate.

The prime minister will speak to Braverman about claims that she broke the ministerial code by asking civil servants whether she could avoid a fine and points on her driving licence without attending a course with members of the public.

Allies of Braverman dismissed the story as a smear by opponents of immigration control, but other Conservative MPs criticised the matter as a “mega-distraction” and said that it would intensify questions about the home secretary’s judgment after several recent controversies.
