The anticipation, indeed the expectation, was that Steve Smith would make a century. Nothing seemed more likely than that this would occur in his third and last match for Sussex before the start of the World Test Championship final and the Ashes. After a couple of unproductive appearances he was on 68 overnight and the pitch had flattened out, yet he was to be upstaged by the youngest cricketer to have played for his adopted county.

Smith was out for 89, leg before to an in-ducker from James Harris, but James Coles, his overnight partner who is now 19, reached his maiden first-class century. He was only 16 and 157 days when he first played for Sussex, a little younger than the watching John Barclay,
