President Zelensky has rejected Russia’s claim to have captured Bakhmut and the Ukrainian army said it was advancing on the city’s flanks.

“Bakhmut is not occupied by Russia today,” he told a press conference at the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

He said that the “absolute total destruction” of Bakhmut by the Russians compared with the devastation of Hiroshima by the United States when it dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city in 1945. “There is absolutely nothing alive [there],” he said.

Ukraine’s army conceded that they had lost most of Bakhmut’s territory but they were hanging on to a handful of its westernmost streets on Sunday and have been making gradual gains over the high ground around it in recent days.
