When Alex George was ten, he was gripped by a debilitating conviction that all his teachers hated him. The fact it was baseless — George was the sort of hardworking, polite boy that any teacher would be relieved to find in their classroom — made no difference. He told no one, but couldn’t shake the anxiety.

It is hard to imagine that anxious, self-doubting little boy going on to embrace a career as an A&E doctor, where life and death can rest on his decisions alone.
