The Pentagon has said it overestimated the value of US weapons and ammunition sent to Ukraine by $3 billion, potentially freeing up more funds for military support to combat the Russian invasion.

Defence officials blamed an accounting error for assigning a higher value on weapons shipped to Ukraine from American stocks than was warranted.

The admission comes as the Biden administration faces growing questions about how it will continue to provide military support to Ukraine without seeking further funding from Congress before the end of the fiscal year.

Pentagon officials told a meeting of members of Congress on Thursday. “We’ve discovered inconsistencies in how we value the equipment that we’ve given,” one official told Reuters.
