An Oxford University spin-out has acquired a US digital identification specialist that is used by American Airlines and approved by a Homeland Security agency.

Onfido has paid an undisclosed amount for Airside Mobile and plans to apply its technology — which allows individuals to upload their verified ID, store it securely and give access to third parties such as government agencies and businesses — to other industries such as financial services.

Mike Tuchen, Onfido’s chief executive, said the technology would “streamline” all identity checks, from pre-flight security one to age verification. It is used only in the US at present, but he plans to extend its reach to international airlines flying from the UK and Europe, via their global alliance networks.
