England’s hopes of regaining the Ashes have been given a significant boost after Ollie Robinson, the Sussex pace bowler, was cleared to join up with the squad next week for the Test match against Ireland at Lord’s.

Robinson, 29, had injured his left ankle while playing in the County Championship match against Glamorgan last week and was seen wearing a protective boot and using a crutch to help him walk. However, scans have revealed there is no damage to the joint, ensuring that he will be available to prepare for the first Test of the summer, which begins a week on Thursday.
