Oisin Murphy, the three-times champion jockey who only returned from a 14-month ban in February, landed the second classic of his career on board Mawj in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket yesterday.

Murphy, 27, said that to win such a big race so soon after returning to the saddle was “beyond my wildest dreams” as Mawj held off a sustained challenge from 6-4 favourite Tahiyra to win by half a length.

It was a fine tactical ride by Murphy, the smooth-talking Irishman who received his latest suspension for a combination of breaching Covid protocols and two failed breath tests for alcohol.
