The man leading this year’s UN climate negotiations has been accused of “double speak” after he called for a “laser focus” on cutting fossil fuel emissions, despite running one of the world’s biggest state oil companies.

Al Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber was appointed president of the Cop28 climate talks taking place in Dubai this November.

The chief executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) told a climate change meeting in Germany this week that countries needed to “come to terms with some realities”.

“In a pragmatic, just and well managed energy transition, we must be laser focused on phasing out fossil fuel emissions, while phasing up viable, affordable zero carbon alternatives,” he told delegates from more than 40 countries in Berlin, including Graham Stuart,
