One of the oldest and biggest civil rights organisations in the United States has issued a travel advisory for Florida, warning that it is “openly hostile” to black Americans and other minorities.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) issued the advisory in response to laws signed by Ron DeSantis, the state governor, which increase penalties for “public disturbances”, remove funding from diversity programmes at state universities and ban an advanced course in black history in schools.

“Florida has criminalised protests, restricted the ability of educators to teach African-American history, and engaged in a blatant war against diversity and inclusion,” the NAACP travel advisory stated.
