Manchester City enjoyed another blue-riband success, another blue-ribbon trophy, and another step towards the Treble. Julián Álvarez struck a one-sided game’s one goal but, in truth, the divide was so wide. City’s second-string strangled Chelsea, whose wretched season cannot end quickly enough for them while City’s continues to go from strength to strength, soon from here (via Brighton and Brentford) to Wembley to Istanbul to immortality, they hope.

These 90 minutes seemed almost incidental. City fans came for the party, waiting for their revered former goalkeeper, Alex Williams, to present the trophy. Pep Guardiola and his players also received their medals from Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League which has charged their club with breaches of financial rules. What a few days
