Today is Gerard Logue’s 75th birthday. While he is looking forward to celebrating the occasion with his family, there is one unusual gift that he is dreading — an annuity from his pension firm Aviva.

Some pension schemes automatically use your pot to buy an annuity — an insurance product that pays a set income — when you turn 75 if you do not withdraw the money or move it into another pension product. But Logue has been trying to withdraw his £30,000 pension savings without success since July and now fears it is too late to stop the automatic conversion.
