John Allan will step down from the board of Barratt Developments three months earlier than planned to prevent allegations about his behaviour from becoming “disruptive” to the company.

The housebuilder told investors this morning that Allan would step aside as chairman, a role he has had for nine years, at the end of next month. He will be succeeded by Caroline Silver.

Allan, a former CBI president, has denied three of the four claims made against him, and apologised for the fourth, in which he allegedly told a mid-ranking CBI manager at the lobby group’s annual conference in November 2019: “That dress really suits your figure.” He has also been accused of touching the bottom of one woman at a CBI annual dinner.
