Influencers have no qualms about wearing them to fashion week; luxury designers flog their own takes for hundreds of pounds. Time was when the humble flip-flop was reserved for communal showers and your commute home after a pedicure, but this week the rubber sandal has had its most unlikely haute endorsement yet: a pair was worn on the red carpet with Dior couture.
It happened in Cannes on Sunday night. Not on the beach, mind: at the film festival. When 32-year-old Jennifer Lawrence stepped out on the Croisette for the premiere of Anatomy of a Fall she turned heads not for her choice of frock, a floor-sweeping showstopper from Dior Haute Couture, but her footwear.
