In 1966 prime minister Harold Wilson declared a state of emergency a week after the National Union of Seamen began a strike. Measures included enabling the capping of food prices and allowing the Royal Navy to control ports. The strike ended on May 29; in 1969 the Who released the rock opera Tommy, a double album. On March 26, 1975 a film based on the album was released, directed by Ken Russell and starring lead singer Roger Daltrey and the rest of the Who; in 1977, 105 children and five teachers were held hostage at a primary school in the Netherlands by gunmen from the South Molucca islands (formerly part of the Dutch East Indies), with another group seizing a train with about 50 passengers. Twenty days later the last hostages were freed by Dutch Marines. Two train hostages and six hijackers were killed; in 1984 a methane gas explosion at Abbeystead water treatment plant in Lancashire resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including two children, during a tour of the plant. An inquiry found that methane had built up in an empty pipe from coal deposits.
Nature notes
In the woodland understorey a bare, fallen branch lay at an angle over a carpet of green dog’s mercury. Leafless and long dead, it might have been hard to identify the tree from which the branch had fallen had it not been for the translucent brown, rubbery, lobed fungus protruding from halfway along its length. This was jelly ear or wood ear fungus, which is often seen on dead elder wood — and so it proved to be in this case. Jelly ear can freeze solid in winter and then continue growing when thawed; dried, it can reconstitute in water.
