Elon Musk joked to President Macron that he had slept in his car after the dishevelled technology billionaire met the French leader following an overnight flight from Mexico, where he was seen dancing at a music festival.

The Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter boss, 51, was invited to the Élysée Palace on Monday morning as the star guest in Macron’s annual summit of global corporate leaders in Versailles to promote investment in France.

In a video during which their small talk could be heard before formal discussions, an exhausted-looking Musk, wearing a suit and tie but unshaven and with his hair awry, told Macron: “I had to sleep in the car.” The president replied: “OK.”
