A high-tech sonar warning system is the newest weapon in the battle against deadly saltwater crocodiles in the tropical north of Australia, where a man was recently killed at a popular fishing spot.

Kevin Darmody, 65, was attacked early this month as he fished on a river bank in a national park about 200 miles northwest of Cairns. His remains were found inside a crocodile after a two-day search that ended with police putting down two large specimens.

His death has led to renewed calls for a cull but the government in Queensland is sticking to its plan of non-lethal means to control them. It has between 20,000 and 30,000 saltwater crocodiles and they are growing in number.
