Did your hedges grow in the drought or stand still? My beech hedges put out a few ginger whiskers, very slowly, and now they’re beginning to fluff out seriously.

But what’s the best way to go about clipping a hedge?

Well, there are many kinds of hedge. There are mixed native hedges — habitat heaven — where it’s pretty safe to cut now, and what matters most is roughing the thing into the desired profile. There are precision hedges in high-gloss gardens where every whisker is a whisker too many. Then there are my hedges and yours, which just do a job, not perfect, but which we want to look even and stay manageable over time to keep separate, or private, various bits of garden.
