The Cannes film festival had a familiar look last week as Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone appeared in big films that featured on the French coast.

However, the line-up of veteran actors has led to fears that the Hollywood talent pipeline has dried up, with a dearth of new stars to take their places at the top of the billing.

Ford, 80, is reprising perhaps his most famous role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (read the Times review); Stallone, 76, is appearing in a new Cliffhanger movie; Schwarzenegger, 75, is starring in an action-thriller called Breakout; and John Travolta, 69, will feature in a rom-com entitled That’s Amore!
