Germany seeks to heal Ukraine rift with arms package worth €3bn

Germany will send arms worth almost €3 billion to Ukraine, including air defence missile systems and tanks, as part of a new military support package timed to coincide with President Zelensky’s visit to Berlin.

The arms and the visit appear to be an attempt by Berlin to heal past rifts with Kyiv after initial German hesitance to support Ukraine’s war effort.

Speaking alongside Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, the Ukrainian leader promised western governments that he would not use supplies of weapons, such as British Storm Shadow cruise missiles, to attack Russian territory.
