It was a day for racing royalty too and few devotees of the sport of kings would not have enjoyed Frankie Dettori winning the first classic of the season, the Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. The jockey is now 52, he has won most of the big prizes and yet in this, his final season, there was something special about his victory on the Andrew Balding-trained Chaldean.

The well-supported second favourite was a decisive winner, having a length and three-quarters to spare over the 125-1 shot Hi Royal with another royal, the Paul Cole-trained Royal Scotsman, staying on strongly for third place. It rained pretty much non-stop throughout the afternoon and though that softened the ground, it didn’t dampen spirits.
