The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix has been called off amid extreme weather conditions in the region, with officials unable to safely access the track because of severe flooding that has caused chaos in northern Italy.

Italian authorities have evacuated 13,000 people on the country’s northeast coast after torrential rain caused 14 rivers to burst their banks, flooding towns and claiming at least six lives as experts say climate change is permanently transforming the country.

Army helicopters swooped to rescue people from roof tops and emergency workers in dinghies patrolled submerged streets in the Emilia Romagna region on Wednesday as up to 500mm of rain fell in some areas in 36 hours, half the annual average.
