Henrik Stenson has resigned his DP World Tour membership after the LIV Golf rebels were hit with retrospective fines of as much as £650,000 and two-month suspensions for playing on the Saudi-backed circuit without official releases.

Stenson — who was stripped of Europe’s captaincy for this year’s Ryder Cup and replaced by Luke Donald after joining LIV last summer — confirmed that he would not be retaining his card to The Times on Thursday, saying: “I would like to mention a thanks to all the European Tour staff and promoters for these 23 years.”

Twenty-six players have been emailed by the DP World Tour with the details of their punishments and have been fined between £12,500 and £100,000 for each event played without an official
