Donald Trump’s media company has filed a $3.78 billion damages claim against The Washington Post, accusing it of making defamatory allegations of “securities fraud and other wrongdoing”.

The claim made by Trump Media & Technology Group, which runs the social media site Truth Social, seeks $2.78 billion in compensation for “loss and injury to its business, brand, good will and future earning capacity”, along with $1 billion in punitive damages.

The claim, filed in the company’s home state of Florida, also seeks access to a trove of documents it claims were provided to the newspaper by Will Wilkerson, the company’s former executive vice-president of operations.
