The remains of an Ethiopian prince who was captured by British troops in the 19th century will not be returned to his home country after Buckingham Palace ruled out an exhumation.

Critics have said it is “not right” that Prince Alemayehu’s remains are still within the grounds of Windsor Castle, where he was buried at the age of 18 after spending a miserable spell in the UK.

Repeated calls for Alemayehu’s return to Ethiopia, including those from the country’s former president and academics, have been rebuffed in recent years.

Turning down the latest request, Buckingham Palace said that any attempt to remove the remains would disturb others buried in the crypt at St George’s Chapel.
