Animal rights activists who stormed a Michelin-starred restaurant are “idiots” who should turn their focus to fast-food burger chains, one of Scotland’s best-known chefs has claimed.

Five protesters were arrested at Cail Bruich in Glasgow’s West End on Saturday after they refused to leave as a demonstration of opposition to its “meat-heavy” menu.

Nick Nairn, the restaurateur and broadcaster, was enraged by their actions. “What these people did was a complete disgrace,” he said. “It’s disgusting behaviour. How dare they try to shut down a small independent family-run business. The team at Cail Bruich go to great lengths to use local ingredients from impeccable and sustainable sources.”

He added: “If they really want to protest about meat and lack of sustainability, they should protest outside
