It was not vintage, but it was what Andy Murray dropped down to the Challenger Tour for. The former world No 1 advanced to the final in Aix-en-Provence with a straight-sets victory over the lucky loser Harold Mayot, defeating the 21-year-old Frenchman 7-5, 6-1.

In Sunday’s final the Briton will face the top seed, Tommy Paul, in only their second meeting after the American’s victory in Stockholm in 2021. Paul defeated Belgium’s David Goffin 6-4, 6-2 in the other semi-final.

The Challenger event has attracted more of a star-studded line-up than usual, with preparatory events thin on the ground before the French Open, with Paul, Brandon Nakashima and Albert Ramos-Vinolas among the entrants. Murray came through against the former world No 6 Gaël Monfils in
